10 reasons not to train at DEFY!

10. They expect dedication - Just having a credit card and a pulse doesn't cut it. They have this idea that someone coming in late, skating through workouts, or not showing up at all not only wastes their time, but disrupts the class and interferes with those who really want to work out. Who needs that kind of accountability?

9. They train too hard - you sweat and breathe hard in every workout. You train too hard to read a magazine while "working out". They won't let you be a part of the program if you just want to go through the motions.

8. They coach you. You can't just sit and peddle on the bike - they make you learn and develop skills. They may even video workouts so people can see what they're doing and coach them on how to improve. You have to learn how to move better, so you can lift more weight faster, which means you get stronger, faster, and lift correctly. Who wants to be coached to be stronger or faster?

7. They don't like whining or excuses. They don't consider the woe-is-me attitude to be a good thing or a badge of courage. It is the right of every human to paint him- or herself as a victim in order to increase their popularity with their everything-is-wrong peer group. Who wants to go to a place that's more concerned with fixing than pitying?

6. They don't throw in useless volume just to stroke your ego. Spending two hours moving from the elliptical machine to every ab or bicep exercise in Muscle and Fiction keeps you from being able to do the effective (i.e. hard) exercises DEFY! expects you to do. How can you feel morally superior if you don't spend every waking minute in the gym?

5. They don't have mirrors or TVs. They don't have a place to adjust your makeup or to flex while you figure out your next bicep exercise. You can't check how your new outfit looks while you work out. You can't watch Jerry or Montel or any other car-crash program to distract you from your workout. On running days, you're going outside where you can't even let your mind wander. Who wants to actually focus on training?

4. They tell you the truth. They let you know when you're not moving right, and they call you on it when you're babying yourself or just going through the motions. They don't praise you when you look like a monkey having a seizure. You need someplace where your self-esteem can be put ahead of any objective standards.

3. They expect you to get better. They expect you to add weight, to go faster, and to maintain excellent form as a regular part of the training. They expect you to try harder to fix the weakest links in your performance. Who wants that kind of stress?

2. They measure performance. They keep score and track your results. If your scores, weights, or times are not improving, they make you figure out why. Who wants to worry about things like "performance" and "results"?

1. They charge too much. They charge enough that you may actually feel compelled to show up and train. They think that just because they provide a top-level, fully equipped, professionally run training space, expert trainers, and a small enough class size to ensure individualized attention, it's of value to their members. Who wants to pay for that kind of service?
